University Spin-Out Business Opportunities
This section lists university research "spin-out" business opportunities seeking investment in the South Yorkshire region.
Full details are only available to Pro Sheffield members.
1. University Spin-Out: Smart Skis and Snowboards
The bases of skis and snowboards are either solid or made up of sintered hydrophobic polymers. To reduce friction between the base and the sliding surface ( be it snow or plastic ), and thus improve speed, the base is invariably wax coated. Ensuring optimal wax application requires a workshop visit i.e. time off the slopes. Adjustment whilst on the slope is restricted to the use of wax blocks to crudely lubricate the base.
2. University Spin-Out: High Performance Solvent Free Batteries
Conventional lithium-organic solvent driven batteries, especially where heavy duty applications are envisaged, run a real risk of becoming explosion or fire hazards because of leakage, particularly in reduced pressure or high temperature environments.
3. University Spin-Out: Flat Screen Technology
The demand for low cost, flexible and bright colour flat screens that are also energy efficient is seemingly insatiable. The next direction is undoubtedly via polymer-based electroluminescent materials, as exemplified by the polyfluorenes.
4. University Spin-Out: Novel Production Method for "Structures" Granules
The need to be able to manufacture granules in which the core and outer shells have different physical properties is well - documented. Applications for such structures would encompass the detergent and cosmetic industries as well as food and confectionary business and the structuring processes currently employed are spray drying, fluid bed granulation etc.
5. University Spin-Out: On-Line Particle Size Analysis for Pharmeceutical Applications
It is extremely difficult to obtain real-time information on particles undergoing size transformation, particularly when the particles encountered are “sticky” as is often the case in pharmaceutical formulation.
6. University Spin-Out: Novel Micro Channel Fluidic Contactor
The pharmaceutical industry demand for new analytical technology in the aftermath of genomics has lead to a dramatic resurgence of interest in micro-fluidic devices that will facilitate chemical reactions.
7. University Spin-Out: Microfluidic Foam And Emulsion Generator
Microfluidics brings new possibilities and methods to food industry. Dispersed inclusions is where small droplets or bubbles are dispersed in another component. The main advantage of microscale devices is good size control. Binary dispersion are inherently unstable as the inclusions tend to increase in size by coagulation. This is turn leads to the deterioration of the product and hence loss of commercial value.
8. University Spin-Out: Smart Sphere
Smart sphere is a small self equipped data logger designed to measure temperature, pressure, humidity etc and designed to allow continuously storage in the internal memory. Data is then transfer to computer for detail analysis.
9. University Spin-Out: Self Healing Composites
In the aerospace and automotive sectors particularly, the need to detect damage in the modern composite materials that are increasingly being employed is of paramount importance. Micro-structure damage, as a result of impact, vibration or fatigue, could be catastrophic if the affected composites constitute critical components of a structure.
