Family experts at leading Sheffield solicitors, Taylor&Emmet LLP, are urging local residents to be more vigilant and supportive of young male victims of domestic abuse.
Recent Home Office figures show that although women are more likely to be subjected to domestic abuse, the problem is spread evenly over the 20-24 year-old age group.
Elizabeth Cassidy, a family law specialist at Taylor&Emmet has dealt with cases for male victims of domestic abuse. She said: “We want to reassure men that judges will treat action brought by them in the same way as those brought by women.”
The court definition of ‘domestic abuse’ encompasses more than just physical violence, taking into account emotional, verbal and financial abuse. Legal action can be taken against an abusive partner, including warning letters and injunction proceedings.
Elizabeth added: “Domestic abuse directed at men goes against the stereotype and currently, the support services are not geared up to deal with it in the same way as they are violence against women. However, it is important that men recognise when their partner’s behaviour, or the behaviour of another family member, constitutes abuse and are not ashamed to seek help. This can only be achieved by opening up greater discussion of the subject and ensuring male victims do not feel rejected by the system.
