The Yorkshire Gold Business Club (YGBC) is holding an exciting business conference on Wednesday the 10th February offering companies in Yorkshire and the Humber an unprecedented chance to hear about the resulting opportunities coming from the ‘Decade of Sport'.

The 'Decade of Sport' includes The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and an array of other championships that will bring a wealth of opportunities in to the UK that Yorkshire and Humber companies can truly benefit from.

The YGBC event, ‘Ready…Set…Compete!’ is taking place at Leeds Town Hall and will present companies with a fantastic opportunity to hear from the Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), John Armitt.

Keynote Speaker, John Armitt will provide companies with an update on the construction programme and an insight into the opportunities available in the run up to London 2012.

Delegates will also hear from Andrew Porter, LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic). Procurement Manager who will be providing an overview of the opportunities associated with the staging of the Games. LOCOG’s procurement will reach a peak this year with approximately £600m worth of opportunities across the staging of the Games, from provision of sports equipment to catering.  Other speakers include Business Link, YGBC and a Yorkshire company benefiting from the Games.

The Workshops will be held by a variety of hosts including LOCOG, Business Link, and YGBC as well sponsors of London 2012, Deloitte and Lloyds TSB. These workshops have been designed to ensure companies are fit to compete by covering all aspects involved in the tender process.

The event will also urge businesses in the Yorkshire and Humber region to get their profile registered and published on CompeteFor to ensure they don’t miss out on opportunities. CompeteFor is a ground-breaking website that enables businesses and organisations unique access to opportunities linked to the London 2012 Games as well as other major public and private sector opportunities.

Lauren Pigg, Project Manager of the Yorkshire Gold Business Club commented,
“This is a great opportunity for Yorkshire companies to hear from the Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), John Armitt. The need for smaller companies and SME engagement in major projects is crucial. We hope that the event will help to inspire Yorkshire businesses to apply for some of the lucrative contracts that are currently available due to major projects such as London 2012.

“Yorkshire Gold Business Club’s aim is to make businesses in the region more aware of the contracts that are out there and to assist individual organisations and collaborations through the tender process so they go on to achieve success.”

John Armitt, Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority said,
“Businesses from Yorkshire and Humberside have already made the most of the golden opportunities that are available to companies across the UK. For example, a Kirkby-based company has supplied some of the structural steelwork for the Aquatic Centre roof and a company from Sheffield has worked on the drainage system for the Basketball Arena.

“While the bulk of the ODA’s direct contracts have now been awarded, there are still opportunities through the UK-wide supply chain and with the London Organising Committee. Companies should sign up to CompeteFor, the business website, to be part of a unique opportunity to showcase UK plc to the world.”

Jim Farmery, Assistant Director of Business at Yorkshire Forward said,
“London 2012 is an unprecedented opportunity for our region’s businesses to gain new business contracts and put their business services and products onto a world stage. It is great to see businesses in the region securing contracts and encouraging to hear that an increasing number of businesses are signing up to Competefor.com, as the access point for available contract opportunities.“

“Businesses in every sector from construction, engineering and manufacturing to creative, merchandising and retail will be among those which stand to benefit and our message to businesses across the region is to register with Competefor.com and be in with a chance to benefit from this incredible event.“

Yorkshire Gold Business Club not only link Yorkshire companies to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games but to a variety of major projects including the £16bn Cross Rail project, The Commonwealth Games, Leeds Bradford Airport, Heathrow Terminal 6 & 3rd runway expansion and Transport for London upgrades. The club aims to ensure that the Yorkshire and the Humber region benefits from these major opportunities.

The Business Club work with companies in the region to ensure they take advantage of these contracts by helping them to identify and bid for contracts that match their skills and expertise.
